Girls empowerment Nordics
Many girls and non-binary youth in the Nordic countries face social exclusion and limited opportunities for meaningful engagement. This project addresses these challenges by developing inclusive programs through cross-border collaboration among youth workers in Sweden, Norway and Denmark.
Project Summary
Project period: January 2024 – June 2025
Partners: Fairhuset, Forandringhuset
Funded by: Erasmus+ KA2

The project focused on developing and testing new methods in youth work to better support girls and non-binary young people in the Nordic countries. The partners — Fryshuset, Fairhuset, and Forandringshuset — created a common program, exchanged best practices, and trained youth workers to promote inclusion, participation, and empowerment. Through joint activities and a final conference, they strengthened collaboration and improved the quality of youth work across the region.

Context & Challenges
Girls and non-binary young people across the Nordic region often face barriers such as low self-esteem, limited opportunities for participation, and a lack of safe and supportive environments. Many experience inactive free time, uncertainty about their future, or exposure to gender-based discrimination. The project addressed these challenges by aligning with the European Youth Work Agenda and focusing on inclusion, diversity, and civic engagement. It also responded to the need for stronger cooperation among youth organizations in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark to share experience and improve the quality of youth work methods.
Activities
The project included joint Nordic activities to identify common needs, exchange best practices, and develop new approaches to inclusive youth work. Partners conducted a needs analysis to understand current trends and challenges faced by girls and non-binary young people. Based on this, they designed a shared empowerment program implemented in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. Youth workers participated in training sessions on gender-sensitive and inclusive practices, while young participants joined local workshops and empowerment activities that promoted leadership and civic participation. The project concluded with a dissemination conference bringing together youth workers, educators, and young people to share experiences and results.
