Planet One
Global project supporting the growing youth movement for climate justice. Planet One operated in the six countries of Armenia, Cameroon, Hungary, Kenya, South Africa and Sweden through the establishment of makerspaces – safe, inclusive environments where youth actively engaged in hands-on learning and addressed real-world environmental challenges. These makerspaces provided a foundation for youth to develop their own initiatives, gain practical skills and build a strong network of support, empowering them to become changemakers.
Project Summary
Project period: April 2021 – December 2024
Partners: Armenian Progressive Youth NGO, Greenpeace
Funded by: Svenska Postkodlotteriet
Planet One was an international youth initiative that empowered young people to act on climate and environmental issues. Its main goal was to provide equal opportunities for youth globally to engage on these topics. The project operated in Armenia, Cameroon, Hungary, Kenya, South Africa and Sweden through makerspaces — safe, inclusive environments where youth learned hands-on and addressed real-world challenges. These spaces helped young people develop initiatives, gain practical skills, and build networks of support, becoming leaders in the global climate justice movement.
Context & Challenges
Young people are among the most affected by the climate crisis and the most active in driving change. The climate crisis intersects with social justice, inequality, democracy, and security — and young people are calling for solutions that reflect lived realities. Yet many face barriers to participation and influence, especially in neighbouring regions to the EU and vulnerable contexts: a lack of safe spaces, limited peer/mentor support, insufficient digital tools, and weak recognition of youth contributions. Global trends like climate anxiety, disinformation, and democratic erosion intensify the need for safe, supportive, empowering spaces that operate across borders. Planet One addressed these challenges by creating equal conditions for youth participation
through a connected network of makerspaces.
Activities
Planet One makerspaces offered hands-on, informal learning several days a week. Activities covered climate, environment, and innovation — art projects, tech talks, research, workshops, exhibitions, and wellness sessions. Youth and youth groups used the spaces for their own initiatives and events, including meetings with decision-makers. Engagement was both in-person and digital, with a global network enabling trainings and events on international topics. The makerspaces continue to foster youth-led climate action and innovation beyond the project’s conclusion.
Impact
Planet One reached over 45,000 young people and supported around 7,000 youth initiatives across eight countries through physical hubs in Sweden (Fryshuset), Hungary (Bolygo), Armenia (APY), and Ukraine (STAN). In total, 3,985 activities were organised in the makerspaces and through the global network.
Inspired by Planet One, two new youth spaces have opened in Europe, with plans for additional makerspaces in Africa. Participants reported a shift in how they view environmentalism — from sacrifice to a fulfilling, empowering practice — increasing hope and optimism for addressing global challenges. Notably, 65% indicated they would have had fewer opportunities to influence their communities without access to the makerspaces.
